synopsis

holding death close is a collection of four audiovisual pieces taking shape as a video game playthrough. Inspired by the non-linear temporality permeating video games, their narrative codes and tropes, the series reflects on themes surrounding death and identity as seen through the lens of an unreliable main character. We follow this character as they attempt to fulfill their quest in search of their memories, past, and Mother, treading through dream-like spaces clouded by loss and uncertainty. Their journey is slowly constructed by the various choices presented throughout the work – however, unlike the interactive nature of video games where the player decides the course of their actions, we are devoid of any agency and are left to watch as the main character chooses their own path.

about the director

enorê is a visual artist working with ceramics and 3D technology to explore the entanglements between virtuality, physical embodiment and matter. Primarily working with 3D printed ceramics, they use clay as a catalyst to question how digital data can be mediated through physical processes, with an interest in clay’s potential to hold, erode, and reconfigure form. Their practice navigates the fluidity between states, not limited to digital or physical, examining how traces of the body persist or dissolve through multiple cycles of translation. Some recent exhibitions include Poetics of Encryption at KW Institute for Contemporary Art (Berlin), Points of Return at Somerset House Studios (London), and PIPA Prize (Rio de Janeiro) where they were a 2024 prize awardee. Recent commissions include Meta Open Arts, Contemporary And (C&), and The  Public Statues and Sculpture Association (PSSA).
