about the filmmakers

Ayo Lawson and Uyaiedu Ikpe-Etim, a remarkable LGBTQ couple, are reshaping Nigerian cinema by creating films that champion representation and amplify marginalized voices. In a country grappling with deep-rooted homophobia, their partnership serves as a beacon of hope, inspiring change and challenging societal norms.

Both born and raised in Nigeria, Ayo, 29, and Uyaiedu, 33, share a passion for authentic LGBTQ storytelling. Frustrated by the lack of representation in media, they set out to create the visibility they never had growing up. Through their films, they challenge prejudice, highlight the struggles and joys of LGBTQ Nigerians, and craft relatable characters that defy stereotypes.

Uyaiedu made history with Ifé, (2020), Nigeria’s first lesbian film. The groundbreaking project sparked national conversations and earned her a spot on BBC’s 100 Women list. Meanwhile, Ayo, a multifaceted filmmaker, writer, and director, has left an indelible mark in the world of art and entertainment, driven by an innate passion for storytelling and visual aesthetics.

Together, they are creating a safe space for LGBTQ individuals, fostering empathy and understanding through film. Despite the legal and societal barriers they face, Ayo and Uyaiedu remain undeterred, committed to building a more inclusive future. Their work paves the way for new voices, empowering marginalized communities and inspiring the next generation of filmmakers.
