synopsis
The short film Between Two Deaths tells the story of a peasant couple from Majdal Shams in the occupied Golan Heights as they navigate their lives amidst ongoing conflict. Their trek to a cherry orchard near the Syrian-Israeli border highlights their struggles between the constant shelling in Syria and the long-standing Israeli occupation. The film captures both the larger forces at play and the intimate human moments between them.
about the director
Born in Kyiv in 1991 to Syrian parents from the occupied Golan Heights, Ameer Fakher Eldin is a writer, director, and film editor who is currently based in Hamburg. His debut feature, The Stranger, premiered at the 78th Venice International Film Festival where it won the Edipo Re Award. Following its success, the film was nominated as Palestine’s official entry for the Best International Feature Film at the 94th Academy Awards. Having been showcased at more than 50 international film festivals, The Stranger has collected numerous awards, including Best Arab Film and the Shadi Abd El Salam Prize for Best Film at the 43rd Cairo International Film Festival. Additionally, in 2022, the film received a nomination for Best Director and won the award for Best Cinematography at the Asia Pacific Screen Awards.
